LODI: The CCR Musical draws its story, characters and themes from the iconic music of John Fogerty & Creedence Clearwater Revival as it immerses the audience in the struggles and triumphs of a Creole family in the Louisiana Bayou during the mid-1970s. Facing poverty, racism, the destructive effects of war, and the unstoppable force of a hurricane, siblings Susie Q (diner owner) and Jody (a musician and Vietnam veteran finally returned home) must find a way to keep their family, diner, and community afloat. With an onstage band and a diverse cast of characters, LODI: The CCR Musical delivers a fresh take on CCR’s catalogue and demonstrates the healing power of friends, community, and music.
Featuring all the classic CCR hits including “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” “Down on the Corner,” “Have You Ever Seen The Rain,” “Lodi,” “Bad Moon Rising,” plus some deep cuts like “Feelin’ Blue,” “It Came From Out of the Sky,” & “Commotion,” LODI: The CCR Musical will captivate audiences and become part of the modern fabric of American musical theater, taking on a life of its own and extending the legacy of CCR’s music into a new cultural landscape.

Fortunately, Jody, Susie’s estranged brother, a Vietnam war veteran, is finally returning home after unsuccessfully seeking his fortune as a musician. SETTINGS & LOCATIONS
-
GREEN RIVER, LOUISIANA (CLEARWATER PARISH)
Green River is both a town and the name of the river on which the town is situated. The river is one of many connected to the Louisiana bayou; the river moves sluggishly but insistently, making this the ideal setting for a dock from which to launch a river boat. The town and Clearwater Parish, in which it is located, have old roots and diverse peoples. This is a territory that’s been hit again and again by natural disasters; its inhabitants are used to having to build themselves up from devastation, and there’s a certain weariness to both the buildings and the people as a result. Everyone speaks English, but Cajun/Haitian Creole is also commonly spoken in these parts.
-
LOTTIE'S DINER
This diner is worn, but well-loved. It’s a popular establishment in the community, with a good number of patrons most nights. The sign on top is prominent, but for some time now most of the letters have been dark, leaving only “LODI” illuminated. The diner has one or two televisions showing the news most of the time, a jukebox machine, 3-5 booths, and a counter where the chef and waiters/busboys interact. The parking lot contains two spaces that we can see from the audience. The diner is situated dockside, just on the banks of the Green River.
-
THE PROUD MARY
A big, bright, shiny new thing, this river boat is here to make money. It’s got blackjack tables, a roulette wheel, and a bar with every type of liquor imaginable. There’s a stage set up for the band–their job is to keep the cruisers distracted from how much money they’re losing. A neon sign proclaims this boat “PROUD MARY.”
CHARACTERS
-
SUSIE QUINN (SUSIE Q)
Mixed race, early twenties.
Smart and determined; strong, but would like it if she didn’t always have to be. Runs the diner by herself and looks after her mother, Lottie. Driven to carry on her father George's legacy of philanthropy and live up to the family name.
-
JODY QUINN (POORBOY)
Mixed race, mid-twenties.
Susie’s older brother, Lottie and George’s son. Originally “Poorboy” from The Poorboys. A passionate musician struggling with shame and regret at having been absent when his father died. Drafted into the Vietnam War in 1967, came back to the US in 1973 when the troops withdrew, but has not returned home until now.
-
LOTTIE QUINN
Black, middle aged.
Mother of Jody & Susie. Wife of George. Sickly (but may not look that way). Intelligent and loving, but no-nonsense. She’s torn between the desire to carry on George’s legacy and the need to protect her family.
-
GEORGE QUINN
White, deceased.
Lottie’s husband, Susie Q and Jody's father. A proud veteran of the Korean War who built the diner on his family’s land and named it for his wife. Died saving lives during a previous hurricane (Edith - 1971). A proud man with a dedication to helping his community.
-
ADRIENNE
White, mid-twenties.
Sharp and loyal young woman. Susie’s and Cody’s best friend. The chef s at the diner. She’s been in love with Jody since they were children. Longs to see the world and make more of herself.
-
CODY (ROOSTER)
Black, mid-twenties.
Walks with a limp–his physical disability prevented him from being drafted. Sweet and loyal. In love with Willy, but frustrated by his refusal to come out. Originally “Rooster” from The Poorboys and Jody’s friend, now Susie Q’s right hand at the diner and Adrienne’s close friend. Longs for the freedom to stop hiding his relationship and a true commitment from Willy.
-
WILLY
White, mid-twenties.
Kind and thoughtful, though he gives the impression of being something of a rake. Jody’s best friend from childhood, but their relationship is rocky because Jody thinks Willy is a draft dodger (in fact, Willy was not drafted because he is gay). Deeply in love with CODY, but afraid to come out. He’s an extremely talented musician and makes his living that way.
-
JACK RICHARDSON
White, late twenties.
Desperate to prove himself no matter the cost. The son of a corrupt Louisiana state senator. A “Fortunate Son,” but also a disappointing one; his current scheme is going to be his way of earning his father’s approval–the only thing he can’t buy.
-
REMY (BLINKY)
White, mid-twenties.
A draft dodger. He’s been a coward all his life, but he wants to be a good guy. Jack’s henchman because Jack is blackmailing him. Originally one of the Poorboys. He’s Blinky to his friends and Remy to Jack and his crew. Torn between his loyalty to his friends and his fear of Jack and the law.
-
DON SMITH
White, middle-aged.
Heavyset, with a vague resemblance to George’s picture in the diner. The manager of the riverboat Proud Mary. Slick and smarmy, an ambitious New Yorker who’s come to whip these Southerners into shape.
